Bald Eagles - Pictures Facts - Protection

Over 100,000 Bald Eagles were killed from 1917 until 1953. At that time, a bounty system was imposed on eagles. It means that a person who kills an eagle gets a certain sum of money from the government. The Bald Eagle Protection act of 1940 made it illegal to kill or possess these birds. Possession of a feather or other body part is prohibited, but Native Americans may possess these items traditional for their culture. In Alaska, Bald Eagles received federal protection in 1959 only.

In the middle of the 20th century, Bald Eagles were endangered or eliminated throughout the majority of states. The major causes are habitat destruction, poaching, pesticide use and poisoning. Today, the population of Bald Eagles has recovered in many states due to strong support of the government. Fines for killing a Bald Eagle and trading in their body parts are great.

Destruction of nest sites, deterioration of salmon spawning streams, mining, and disturbance of these birds by idle watchers in remote areas pose problems for the species. Also, Bald Eagles often get hit by vehicles or get poisoned by lead that is found in wounded game.

Thanks only to reintroduction Bald Eagles still survive nowadays. The population has completely recovered in the beginning of the 21st century, but some states continue reintroduction efforts. There are two methods of reintroduction. Eaglets may be captive-hatched and placed to the nests of eagles whose eggs failed to hatch. Young Bald Eagles may also be placed on man-made towers located in remote zones.
