Bald Eagles stay in one nest for many years and rebuild it each year, adding more material. The largest eagle nests have reached up to 2 tons in weight. Bald Eagles nest close to water on large trees, which provide sparse cover above and a clear view of the surroundings. These birds begin to nest in April, when both male and female gather nesting material. Bald eagle females lay 2-3 eggs, and incubation lasts about 35 days.

Usually only the strongest chick survives, the younger ones are killed or starved to death. The chick spends about 75 days in the nest and then leaves it. Chicks reach sexual maturity at the age of 4-5 years and build their own nests near the place where they were born. When all chicks have left their nests, all eagles gather in the area where food is plentiful.

Young Bald Eagles migrate before their parents, and scientists don't know how they find the right way. The majority of eagles return to their native place, but some do not; perhaps, they loose their way. Migration begins in fall, when lakes freeze over. Bald Eagles have to look for open water and travel to coastal regions or to large rivers near dams. In the spring, they migrate quickly and in the fall they may remain in their usual area for some time. The average speed of migrating Bald Eagles is 30 miles per hour; they use rising currents or warm air. Usually Bald Eagles migrate in groups, and their stem spreads out about a mile apart. In some areas, Bald Eagles live all the year round, for example in Florida.
